Day 7 - Abuse and Negligence

Day 7.  I started very early.  At around 6:30am, I asked the guards to scan a rather large number of papers.  They did not refuse to do it this morning.  That's good.

I spend almost all day in shuffling papers to look for a pro bono counsel both in Queensland and New South Wales.  My case is currently in the Queensland Registry of the Federal Court.  But because I am here, if I find a lawyer here, the case can be easily transferred to
New South Wales.  If I find a lawyer in Queensland, the matter will stay there as my attendance is not necessary in this case.  A few organisations are considering my case in both States and I also made a few enquiries to lawyers whom I personally know.  So far, I was knocked back by one in Queensland and one in New South Wales.  So two down, but several more to go.

My peaceful day lasted until I heard a detainee's voice calling me.  She was the first detainee I met in this centre.  She told me the basics of the detention centre.  A nice girl.

She asked me whether I know about the law and policy in this country.  Well, maybe, depending on the area.  I asked her what she wanted to know.  She showed me both of her wrists.  Scars!  A lot of it!!  On both wrists!!!  Cuts just like self-harming Borderlines'.  What
happened?  She told me that she had gone to physiotherapy today.  Escorts handcuffed her so tightly that handcuffs made those scars.  So much so that medics recommended to the escorts to take them off.  The escorts refused.  Unbelievable!  Even the violent Police do not do that.  What the hell is this...

While I was writing possible contacts on a piece of paper to give her, another detainee talked to me.  She said, she was given wrong medications, became sick and got hospitalized overnight.  That sounds awful.  Wrong prescribed medications are very dangerous.  She could be dead!  Thank goodness, I told the nurse that I didn't need a
medication.  Better stay away.

Superficially, this place looks peaceful but there seems to be a lot more to it....
